New Play Features Perspectives of Seven Seniors
For more than a year, seven residents, ages 73 to 95, of Aldersgate Life Plan Community located at 3800 Shamrock Drive in Charlotte, have been reviewing their lives and working with The Playworks Group to create a new theatre experience. Their stories will be depicted on stage for the first time in Acting Our Age: A Century of America in Seven Voices at 7 p.m. on June 19 and 20 at Spirit Square’s McGlohon Theatre, in Charlotte.
In their up to 10 decades, the participants have experienced or witnessed the Great Depression, the Civil Rights Movement, the continued rise of corporate America and many wars. They also represent the growing senior community, the fastest-growing population segment as the Census Bureau projects seniors will outnumber children in the U.S. by 2035.
The project entailed group interviews and writings that form the framework for a tapestry of life experiences that began under modest circumstances and reflect the growth and achievement of American perseverance and opportunity. The performances will be the culmination of nearly two years of work developed by director Steve Umberger and gerontologist Dr. Lyndall Hare.
Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Location: 345 N. College St. For more information or to obtain tickets, call 704-372-1000 or visit BlumenthalArts.org.
