Depression, Chinese Medicine and Tai Chi in Charlotte
May 28, 2021 06:40PM ● By Camilo SanchezChinese medicine views depression as resulting from congestion of the liver function (liver qi) and weakness of the kidney function (kidney qi). Constrained liver qi fails to regulate the storage, release, and further distribution of glycogen (stored blood sugar) to the muscle tissue and the brain resulting in low energy, alternating mood and depression. On the other hand, weakness of the kidney qi results in hypo-activity of the endocrine system and insufficient hormonal production which can cause deep-seated depression. In addition, gut dysfunctions lead to poor assimilation and synthesis of important neurotransmitters necessary for healthy brain function and mood. Tai chi is an excellent mind-body exercise that has been utilized to improve mood by activating the flow of liver qi, strengthening the kidney qi, supporting digestion and increasing vital energy.
