Environmental Home Makeovers in the Charlotte Area

Project 1: The Smithson Residence, SouthPark, in Charlotte
For Ashley and Ryan Smithson, a professional couple, the goal was to remodel their kitchen in a way that married timeless design with sustainability. They desired a space that would endure the daily demands of their young family without sacrificing style. They decided to retain and repaint their existing solid wood cabinetry, which was still in great condition, thereby reducing waste. The addition of new quartz countertops, classic handmade subway tiles from Walker Zanger, updated hardware and striking lighting fixtures transformed the outdated kitchen into a bright, modern space. Noteworthy is the selection of Circa Lighting pendants, which Ashley finds both unique and statement-making. The result is a kitchen that not only meets the family’s needs. but does so with minimal environmental impact.
Project 2: Michelle Weeks’ Home Office in Weddington
In designing the home office for Michelle Weeks, a top real estate broker in Charlotte, the focus was on creating a space that was both stylish, functional and capable of supporting her demanding schedule. She incorporated existing furniture pieces to maintain a sense of continuity and familiarity. The room is anchored by chinoiserie panels on grasscloth, adding a layer of historical richness and sophistication. A luxurious crystal chandelier from Circa Lighting and a hand-knotted wool rug from Artisan Rug Gallery elevate the space while adhering to sustainable practices. Wool rugs are chosen for their durability and eco-friendliness, essential for a space frequented by clients and guests.
These projects demonstrate that luxury and sustainability can coexist beautifully. By choosing to refurbish existing pieces and opting for materials that are both durable and environmentally friendly, we can significantly reduce our ecological footprint. For those interested in sustainable interior design, resources like the Sustainable Furnishings Council provide invaluable guidance and support. These initiatives not only enhance our living spaces, but also promote a healthier planet.
