Roundup Presents Multiples Risks

Jun 28, 2024 09:36AM ● By Alan Corder

Roundup, a widely used herbicide produced by Monsanto (now part of Bayer), has been a staple in agricultural and residential weed control for decades. Its active ingredient, glyphosate, is effective at killing weeds, but concerns about its safety have sparked significant debate and research, revealing numerous potential dangers.

One of the primary concerns is the potential link between glyphosate and cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organization, classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015, based on studies showing an association between glyphosate exposure and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomaSubsequent lawsuits have resulted in significant financial penalties for Monsanto as courts ruled in favor of plaintiffs that developed cancer after prolonged Roundup exposure.

Some research suggests that glyphosate can disrupt endocrine function, leading to hormonal imbalances, as well as negatively affect gut health by altering the microbiome, potentially contributing to conditions like celiac disease and gluten intolerance.

Environmental concerns are significant because glyphosate is known to persist in the ecosystem, potentially contaminating soil and water sources. It can harm non-target plant speciesbees and butterflies, disrupting habitats by affecting the food supply of insects, birds and other wildlife.

Weeds can get out of control in the summer, but even so, it is wise to consider alternative methods of control and support organic farming practices to reduce reliance on potentially harmful chemicals. Pollinators in the yard will appreciate it.
