Neurofeedback for Reduction of Traumatic Symptoms

Trauma can find its way into our lives via small events such as witnessing a car accident or big traumas involving exposure to violence. Often, neurological changes in the brain patterns occur. In Bessel van der Kolk’s book, The Body Keeps the Score, he writes, “Neurofeedback nudges the brain to make more of some frequencies and less of others, creating new patterns that enhance its natural complexity and its bias towards self-regulation.”

A combination of approaches aims to stabilize the nervous system. Hypnotherapy, yoga and meditation all bring our alpha waves up in areas on the brain that cause calm and clear-headedness. The techniques often used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are deep state protocols that bring a person into this trance-like state where clients are often able to resolve issues without the use of medication or reliving the incident.

A recent meta-analysis published in the European Journal of Psychotraumatology provided a clear indication that neurofeedback has been shown to reduce the symptoms of PTSD, including anxiety, depression and other neurophysiological changes. Neurofeedback is a simple set up in office with a few electrodes placed on the head, where the patient relaxes in a safe, quite room and listens to or watches a series of visual/audio cues that act as the feedback in real time from the brain for 10 to 30 minutes.

Neurofeedback treatment added into the programs has seen added benefits of better sleep. Most clients report falling to sleep quicker and sleeping deeper, as well as having increased energy and better overall mood.
