The Five Elements of Chinese Medicine and Good Health

Oct 31, 2024 09:35AM ● By Camilo Sanchez, LAc, MAOM

Health is the result of the interplay between our inherited genetic traits (nature) and epigenetic environmental factors (nurture). Our genetics is our inborn constitution, while the epigenetic factors we are exposed to after birth determine the expression of which genes will be turned on or off.

In the system of Chinese medicine, our genetics refers to the prenatal chi inherited from our parents at the time of conception. The epigenetics is the postnatal chi acquired after birth.

The prenatal chi or genetic code is stored in the DNA at the nucleus of every one of our cells. It is responsible for our physical traits, inherited strengths and weaknesses, overall vitality, immune resistance, how we respond to environmental triggers and susceptibility to specific diseases.

The postnatal chi includes diet, exercise, sleep, breathing, mental and emotional stresses, environmental triggers and lifestyle. It had been established that the most influential epigenetic factors in our health are our diet and emotional disposition.

In Chinese medicine, our constitution is determined by the predominance of two of the five elements (wu xing)—water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Each element oversees one of the main physiologic systems of our body, and by extension is linked to specific internal organs, tissues, sense organs, seasons, colors, tastes, secretions, times of day and emotions.

For instance, the water element is associated with the kidneys, urinary bladder and reproductive system, and it controls our marrow and bone tissue, water balance and fluid metabolism, lower back region, hormonal production, knee joints, sexual function, hearing acuity and endurance.

Strengthening and balancing our inherited constitution or prenatal energy is the basis for correcting the root imbalances of our health issues, preventing disease, increasing vitality and maintaining lifelong wellness.

In Chinese medicine, we can identify the patient’s five-element constitution by palpating specific reflex zones on the abdomen and acupuncture points located on the back and front of the trunk and looking at the general signs and morphology of the body.
