A Reiki Life Academy, in Charlotte, is collecting new yoga mats for children recovering from the effects of trauma. Those that make donations through December 22 will be entered into a drawing for a healing-themed gift basket valued at more than $120 that will also take place on that day.

Nancy Bunt provides weekly reiki and relaxation instruction at a residential psychiatric treatment facility, which serves the needs of 36 children between 5 and 14 years old with serious emotional and behavioral problems. The goal is to collect enough mats so that each child has access to one for their therapeutic relaxation activities.

“I was given some of the exact same tools I offer these children when I was young, and I know first hand just how great an impact they can have on a child’s ability to navigate life challenges,” says Bunt. “I didn’t realize when I began volunteering my services to them more than six years ago just how much it would change me. I know they feel like what I do is a gift to them, but I truly feel it’s a gift to me that I get to share in their life’s journey.”
