Sara Cain-da Costa, owner of Sara da Costa Wellness, on Why You Need a Health Coach in 2023
Jan 02, 2023 04:46PM ● By Sara Cain-da CostaIt’s exciting, the new year is here! You may be inspired and ready to take on the health & wellness goals you’ve been putting off.
You have good intentions and enthusiasm to lose 20 lbs, get back to the gym & yoga class, start meditating, cook at home more, finally start a new hobby, a new career, go back to school, etc. etc. etc. so that you can lower your blood pressure, lower A1C, sleep better, feel happier, find purpose in life.
Week 1: you’re all in! Meditate every morning, go to the gym after work 3 times per week for 1 hour at a time, cook dinner every night, stopped drinking sodas, researched how to start your hobby.
Week 2 & 3: still going strong, added in sending resumes out for new job opportunities.
Week 4: kids and work demands increase and your priorities are challenged. You’re getting a bit weary of trying to do it all, meditated 2 mornings, went to the gym 1 time, ordered delivery for dinner 5 nights and cooked at home the other 2 nights.
Week 5: Super Bowl, the Oscars, Spring Break or anything becomes an excuse. It’s starting to get overwhelming, you’re lucky if you got to the gym once this week and cooked at home once.
Week 6: back to former unhealthy habits and feel frustrated. You have good intentions to start over next week, but that never happens until next year’s New Year’s Resolutions. And the cycle begins again.
In my 20+ years in the wellness industry as a former yoga studio owner, yoga instructor, and health coach the pattern is the same every single year. There’s a flood of inspired goal setters starting on January 3 through about mid-late March right before Spring Break. Then after Spring Break everyone disappears. Studies show that approximately 80% of New Year resolutions will have been abandoned by the end of February.
Let’s shift this pattern!
THIS is why you need a Health Coach in 2023, the missing piece to your wellness plan.
You are designed to be well. Your body is brilliant, designed to heal, love, grow, inspire, laugh, and live out loud. In an effort to take back that brilliance it’s important to mindfully craft your unique health & wellness vision & goals in a way so that you don’t give up. Transformation toward sustainable healthy habits for life.
In a nutshell, Health Coaches can bridge the gap between doctor (and other wellness professionals) and patients, creating a realistic plan and work with you to keep you on track when others are giving up. They can work in conjunction with healthcare professionals to provide clients with motivation & goal setting strategies, wellness education, and accountability they need to improve their lives. Health Coaches take a holistic approach to wellness and address all the areas of life that can affect health – factors like relationships, diet, sleep, exercise, career, work/life balance, and spirituality, which are all just as important as what someone eats!
Struggling with a lack of clear direction and WAY too many things on your list or in your head can feel isolating and overwhelming. When you work with a Coach you’ll feel more energized, more confident, and less stressed = Better Wellness!
5 Top Things a Health Coach can help you with:
Personalized plan - As your co-pilot, help you develop a customized vision & plan that takes into account your health and lifestyle and fits the way you live.
Small Steps Count - Think of yourself as a “start up”. Setting manageable and sustainable “micro-goals” can lead toward sustainable habits in the long run vs. big lofty goals all at once. For example, start with 5 minutes of meditation on Wednesday mornings a month and see how that goes first before diving into every day for 15 minutes.
Sounding Board - Offer suggestions & education much beyond “lose some weight” or “eat more vegetables”. Our time together will offer creative “out of the box” thinking on how you can achieve your goals.
Accountability - This piece is often forgotten, one of the big reasons why goals fail. Changing long-held negative behaviors and beliefs is challenging. Making changes often requires a dose of accountability (in a kind, compassionate way of course).
Celebrate Wins - met your meditation micro goal for the week? Yes, celebrate that! It’s a win.
