Mold Toxicity, Weight Gain and Ozone Therapy

Mold exposure can cause an array of unrecognized symptoms such as thyroid dysfunction, which results in weight gain, and Hashimoto’s disease, which causes a drop in the amount of hormones the thyroid gland makes (hypothyroidism). Mold toxicity is becoming more common because of decreased airflow in large building design and the increased use of drywall in construction.

In 2007, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study noted that about 47 percent of American homes have dampness and mold problems. Another EPA study reported that about 85 percent of commercial buildings have mold and active leaks. This number may be higher in damp areas. While mold exposure does not affect everyone the same way, for some, it can be a major contributor to thyroid dysfunction and the inability to lose weight.

Mold burdens the body’s system to detox effectively and those exposed often become sensitive to everything. When the body cannot remove toxins, it stores them in a “safe” place such as fat cells, thus diluting the toxins. But mold can also cause inflammation and resistance to leptin, a hormone that communicates with the brain when the body has stored enough fat. This makes the body think it is starving and forces it to conserve energy in the form of more fat.

This reduction of overall thyroid function can go undetected, even if lab tests appear normal. A Finnish study examined people exposed to toxic mold, and 20 percent developed hypothyroidism compared to 5.78 percent of the general population. The conclusion would seem that those exposed to mold are likely to have weight issues and may never lose weight and keep it off, regardless of how hard they try.

However, extracorporeal blood oxygenation and ozonation (EBOO), a form of ozone treatment that addresses mold toxicity, helps the body with the elimination of mycotoxins and other toxins linked to mold exposure and lower the overall toxic burden. EBOO also treats the underlying cause of mold toxicity to help improve thyroid function, exhaustion, skin diseases and cognitive processes. EBOO also assist the body in healing and repairing the damage brought on by health problems associated with mold.

Regarding the inability to lose weight and thyroid disease caused by mold toxicity, it is important to identify the root cause, reduce exposure and focus on detoxification. EBOO therapy provides the most potent delivery of ozone to assist the natural immune supportive and detoxification processes of the body to address toxicity issues (including weight gain) and help the body heal.
